Why the Monsoon Is the Most Underrated Season in South India
Everyone avoids June to September. The waterfalls are at full volume, the hills are empty and the rates drop by a third.
The conventional advice is to visit South India between October and March. It is not wrong, but it means the hill stations are busiest exactly when they are least dramatic. The monsoon is the season the Western Ghats were built for.
What actually improves
- Waterfalls run at genuine volume — Abbey, Athirappilly and Dudhsagar are transformed
- Ayurvedic treatment is traditionally prescribed in the monsoon, and Kerala resorts price it accordingly
- Room rates fall 30–40% at properties that are booked solid in December
- The light for photography is soft and constant all day
The trade-offs are real: some trekking routes close, leeches exist, and a full day can disappear to rain. Plan indoor-friendly bases, keep the itinerary loose, and bring footwear you do not mind writing off.
