Pondicherry keeps two distinct halves: White Town, laid out by the French with bougainvillea over every wall, and the Tamil quarter, louder and older. The promenade closes to traffic at night and the whole city walks it. Auroville, the experimental township north of town, is worth the trip for the architecture alone.
