Eating Your Way Down the Konkan Coast
From Goan vindalho to Mangalorean ghee roast — the coastal food belt between Mumbai and Kerala is the best eating in India.
The Konkan coast runs roughly 700km from Maharashtra down to Karnataka, and the food changes every hundred of them. Coconut is the constant. What shifts is the souring agent — kokum in the north, tamarind further south, raw mango in between — and that single variable rewrites everything.
Goa: two cuisines, not one
Hindu Saraswat Goan food and Catholic Goan food are genuinely distinct. The first leans on kokum and coconut with no beef or pork; the second gave you vindalho, sorpotel and choris pao. Order xacuti and ambot tik at the same table and taste the two traditions side by side.
- Mangalore: ghee roast, neer dosa, gassi — ask for the fish of the day, never the menu default
- Malvan: sol kadhi as a digestif, not a starter
- Kerala: karimeen pollichathu, wrapped in banana leaf and grilled
- Eat at lunch. Coastal kitchens cook what came in that morning and it is gone by evening
If a coastal restaurant has a laminated menu with photographs, keep walking.
